About

EK Powe Elementary is an extraordinary school. Children come alive with the understanding that school can be a great place. Students come from a diverse array of backgrounds. Teachers and administrators reach out and touch their lives in so many different ways. Students from Duke's Center for Documentary Studies spent the fall semester documenting Powe. Our hope is that this website gives you a glimpse into the commitment, effort and care that brings Powe to life.

The Duke class is called Documentary Photography: Education, Childhood and Growth. Childhood is one of the most transient times in our lives, and each Duke student spent the full semester photographing one story. Service Learning at Duke and CDS both provided grants to produce this website. Students provided final prints for an exhibit during an Open School Night. The website and all prints were given to the school as a gift with the hope that they support the hard work teachers and staff put in every day to educate the children of Durham.
